Donation helps feed needy students

eachers in Tuscaloosa will provide of snacks to dozens of hungry students after a $5,000 donation from the Alabama Credit Union on Thursday.The donation is prize money from the second annual Love My Credit Union Campaign, a three-month contest in which voters nationwide select deserving credit unions based on videos they upload.

Alabama Credit Union and three others were selected as winners for October, and each of the winners will receive $5,000 to donate to the charity of their choice. For the Tuscaloosa-based Alabama Credit Union, that charity is the Secret Meals for Hungry Children program, through which teachers in seven West Alabama counties can send food home in the backpacks of students they believe are in need.

The Love My Credit Union campaign is a nationwide video contest that invites credit unions to create a short video showcasing their good deeds and charitable work. To see Alabama One's video, along with others in the contest, to www.VoteLoveMyCU.org.

"Childhood hunger is an epidemic that can be stopped with the help of local feeding programs," said Kelley June Porter, Alabama Credit Union's marketing manager. "Through the donation that the Alabama Credit Union Foundation has received from the Love My Credit Union Campaign, 35 children will receive a food pack each weekend from the Secret Meals For Hungry Children program."

The $5,000 check was scheduled to be presented to the Secret Meals program at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Alabama Credit Union Administration Building, 220 Paul W. Bryant Drive East, in Tuscaloosa.

A spokesman for the Love My Credit Union Campaign said to date, more than 90 institutions have submitted videos to the contest, drawing more than 250,000 votes from fans. The competition is hosted by CU Solutions Group and the Credit Union National Association.
