HEAT PIZZA, SECRET MEALS TEAM UP TO TAKE ON CHILDHOOD HUNGER

Heat Pizza Bar and Secret Meals for Hungry Children are teaming up to combat childhood hunger in West Alabama’s schools.

The restaurant is hosting its first-ever Heat for Hunger fundraiser Thursday, and they’re hoping to raise $2,000 — enough to feed 14 children every weekend for an entire school year.

The program makes food packs and slips them inside children’s backpacks before they leave school Friday afternoon so they’ve got something to eat over the weekend.

Heat Pizza partner Will Fleming said he’s eager to help the cause.

“As soon as they told me 22 percent of children in the state aren’t sure where the next meal is coming from, it was easy for us to get involved,” he said.

Heat for Hunger is Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Heat Pizza Bar’s location next to Government Plaza in downtown Tuscaloosa.

Entrance to the event is $5.
